 The
Taj
Mahal is a tomb built
by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for
his wife. We arrived when the sun was low in the western
sky and shinning on the building.
|
 Now
I can say I've been to the Taj Mahal. The sun continued to go down
and the Taj turned more golden colored.
|
 The
front entrance shows the inlaid marble work that is a part of this
magnificant building.
|
 We
waited on line to go inside to see the tomb. The sun finally went
down over the building next to the Taj Mahal. Afterwards, we attend a demonstration by descendents of
the builders of The Taj (so they said) who explained how the stones are inlaid
in marble. Then the shopping began.
|
 Another long drive
and this one was to Jaipur,
also known as the pink city because the buildings
are pink. The city is located in the state of Rajasthan. On the way we
saw
many camels pulling carts. We stopped at Fatehpur
Sikri, a city built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the late
1500s.
|
 At
one time it was a capital but there was not
enough water to sustain it. The emperor had three
wives, a Hindu, Muslim and Christian. In the center of the
courtyard the stones form a parchesei board.
|
 Workers
carry heavy stones and chisel them into decorative shapes for the
buildings.
